4 Ways To Avoid Temptation Traps

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

Perhaps it was something you saw that created the urge to do it. Maybe it was the aroma of a familiar, intoxicating scent that re-directed your actions. It could have been a memory with deep roots that keeps pulling you back to a familiar place and time.

Let's be honest. It’s probably always nearby – never completely out of reach. Right?

Temptation for Christian men is akin to breathing, It will always be a part of our life.  Being tempted – isn’t the problem...even Christ was tempted.  It's how we respond that determines our victory or our failure.

As long as we pledge our heart and life to God, evil will chase us and tempt us.  Sometimes evil needs very little help... as we leave back doors open for easy entry. So as you commit to “give up” those things which distract you from God’s presence, be prepared for the onslaught of temptations - and look for the pathway out before you give in.

The good news!  Temptation can be defeated when our desire for God’s presence remains greater than our desire for the enticements temptation brings. Here are a few suggestions to help you beat down those pesky temptations:

  • Pray daily about the temptation (give it a name)
  • Search the Bible for advice on your struggle. It's in there.  The discipline of searching for instructions will focus your energy elsewhere.
  • Commit to a core group of guys and share your struggle
  • Make a list of what tempts you – give it to an accountability partner and ask them to check in with you.

Move beyond those temptations. Be proactive!  You can do it… escape routes are all over the place, just look for them.

THE RIGHT NEXT STEP: -

  • Before noon tomorrow, tell one person you trust about a temptation that continues to trap you. Be willing to accept accountability.

PRAY:  God, I need help. You know my struggle and you have provided me with escape routes I continue to neglect. Give me the courage to invite a trusted friend into the battle with me. I want to be a stronger man for your sake. Amen.
